KTEK0068-3001 Welded Metal Structures
University of Turku, Department of Mechanical and Materials Engineering, 2025
📘 Lecture Contributions (UTU)
🔹 Module 1: Fundamental NDT Methods
👁️ Visual Testing (VT): Provides the first inspection step by identifying weld surface irregularities, misalignments, and visible discontinuities.
💧 Penetrant Testing (PT): Uses capillary action and developer bleed-out to reveal surface-breaking cracks on non-porous weld surfaces.
🧲 Magnetic Particle Inspection (MPI): Detects surface and near-surface flaws in ferromagnetic welds through magnetic flux leakage patterns.
🔹 Module 2: Eddy Current Testing (ECT)
⚡ Eddy Current Testing: Employs electromagnetic induction and coil impedance changes to identify surface cracks, corrosion, coating thickness variations, and weld-toe defects in conductive materials.
🔹 Module 3: Ultrasonic Testing (UT, PAUT & TOFD)
🔊 Ultrasonic Testing (UT): Uses high-frequency sound waves and A/B/C-scan data to locate internal weld flaws and measure depth accurately.
📡 Phased Array UT (PAUT): Enables electronic beam steering and focusing for full weld-volume imaging.
⏱️ Time-of-Flight Diffraction (TOFD): Measures diffracted crack-tip signals to provide precise flaw sizing in welded structures.
🔹 Course Integration
These methods collectively give students a full surface-to-volume defect detection toolkit that supports weld quality assurance across all inspection stages.
