Additive Manufacturing with Bio-based Materials and Biopolymers (ÅAU NM00CW34)

Åbo Akademi, Åbo Akademi, 2025

Learning objectives and transferable skills:

Additive manufacturing (AM), known as 3D printing, provides customized solutions and thus has become an emerging technology in material development towards versatile applications ranging from bioplastics to medical devices. By the end of course, the students should be able to have knowledge on:

  • Terminology of additive manufacturing
  • Most common AM approaches, working principles, and materials to feed, especially on bio-based options
  • Basics about rheology, melting rheology, and photorheology
  • Processes of the AM approaches
  • AI-driven material design is briefly introduced, illustrating how artificial intelligence can enhance material performance for specific applications

The course will include lab demonstrations (90 min x 6)
